The game is an RPG with turn-based play for the combat scenes. No one will survive for long alone, so make sure you gather a good crew about you to help you with your missions – with teamwork you will all survive for longer. You can use in-game companions, or team up with a real world buddy for co-operative play.

The game is set in a dystopian future – something has happened to transform the world into a freezing wasteland with Colorado subject to even more extreme cold and snow than we would consider normal today. This is a shift from the previous games dryer and desert based LA and Arizona, and brings with it a new set of problems for the player’s character and excellent new graphics and imagery that make the game interesting and immersive.

Unique Point of View

Having an isometric viewpoint sounds as though it is something serious and technical, but, in fact, it is pretty simple to grasp, especially when you picture it more visually. It simply means seeing more than you would in real life, due to the perspective being slightly skewed to include more of the scene in the picture, instead of adhering perfectly to real life proportioning.

This point of view is used for video games – and for cartoons and even depictions of theatre performances – because it makes the scene in front of the viewer more compulsive: packed with action and every bit of it clearly visible, as though the world has been compressed ever so slightly to make it more interesting – but not so much that you end up with a fish-eye lens view of everything, which would be very distracting!

Points to Look Out For

The following unique features will enhance your playing experience: see how many of them you can spot or collect:

Overlook: Stephen King’s massive haunted hotel, the Overlook, as seen in The Shining was based on the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park in Colorado, and this same location has been reused in this game, although hopefully the evil and possessive (in many senses of the word) ghosts have been left between the pages of King’s thrilling book.

Two Locations: The main two locations in the game are the city of Colorado Springs itself, where all the action will happen, and where you will spend much of your play time, and the Ranger’s base, where you will be given all your missions, get the chance to re-equip and generally ready yourself to get back into the fray.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work: While much of the game is largely the same as the previous incarnation, there is much more of an emphasis on teamwork, with some skills being only team based, and needing team training and practise to master. But once mastered your whole team will be stronger – or your whole enemy squad will be weaker, either of which makes it easier to beat them!
