As always, the game is open world, set in a fictional version of Miami, Florida, which is called, Vice City, Leonida, and you take the avatar of Lucia – the series’ first female protagonist. As you play along, Lucia will quickly reveal her heist skills.
Her partner in crime (literally) is a male playing character, and together, they set out to conquer Vice City – or, at least, enough of it to keep them in fast cars, fine food and out of the local jail.
As always you will play along the story mode, exploring widely as you do so, taking on missions and side-quests, and fighting, shooting and otherwise battling your way out of trouble as you earn in-game currency and snaffle loot. But it’s not all grim battles and combat, you can also – if you want to – cruise along the wide Miami – uh – Vice City highways that run parallel to the ocean, blasting music and enjoying a moment of downtime.
The Nitty Gritty
The game controls are easy to figure out, and the physics engine benefits from ten years of advances to give you the smoothest ride, even as it challenges you with the puzzle elements of car theft!
Keep an eye on your health – you don’t want to run low on energy just before the law comes barrelling along to try and disrupt your plans, no matter if that’s grabbing a bite to eat, nicking that shiny motor that’s just begging for your hands on the steering wheel, or even more felonious shenanigans that you’d like to go smoothly!
What’s Hot in the City?
Neon: Miami is a city of modernity and glitz, and Vice City is no different. Look out for the fabulous arrays of neon signage around the city (some of it will help you in your missions and quests, so pay attention at all times) and enjoy the spectacle even as you use it to navigate, charm your companions, or just provide excellent selfie lighting!
Cityscapes: the city is laid out in a realistic manner – and there are plenty of long straight stretches, perfect for putting your foot down to get some distance between you and law enforcement officers. Make the most of the urban sprawl by exploring the detailed open world to your heart’s content.
Characters: Florida is known for being a place packed to the gunwales with quirky people who do strange and weirdly wonderful things – and its fictional counterpart, Leonida, is no different. Look out for car twerkers, face tattoos, straight-talking old ladies in housecoats and so much more – you might even spot some characters based on real life celebrities: see how many you can identify!
Cars – of course! Which cars and what capabilities do they have? Well, now. That would be a huge spoiler so, nah – you gotta play the game to find out!
